Many thanks to all who attended our recent Annual Meeting at the Parish Center for the Arts. We started with a short business meeting including recent trust activity updates from our President Ron Gemma. This was followed by our guest speaker, MDAR environmental biologist Jennifer Forman Orth who presented a very informative and enjoyable presentation on invasive plants.
There are many introduced pests and non native invasive plants in our region but Jennifer was able to talk about some of the more difficult to eradicate plants such as Asiatic bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus), Japanese Knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum), Japanese barberry & Mile a minute (MAM) (Persicaria perfoliata). She also talked about some early detection species that are only in a few areas of MA – Giant Hogweed & Kudzu. Please check out the WANTED posters below and if you see Giant Hogweed or Kudzu, please contact the MDAR Plant Pest Hotline at 617-626-1779 or visit their website – http://massnrc/pests (click “Report Pests”).
Jennifer also complemented the trust on our ongoing MAM invasive control program. Please contact the trust if you come across any new location for MAM.
