Post talk update: Here is the February 11, 2021 recorded presentation by Dr. Robert Thorson on New England Stone Walls.
Join Geologist and New England’s foremost expert on stone walls, Robert Thorson, in a conversation on the fascinating history of Westford’s signature, but often forgotten, landform – stone walls. Thorson uncovers why New England is uniquely situated to be the quintessential landscape for stone walls and the work that communities are doing to preserve them.
Professor Thorson will join us February 11th @ 7:00 PM for video streaming presentation on New England stone walls. During the second half of his presentation, he will examine several evocative images from Weston, showing what local “wall-watchers” might see that “bird-watchers” might not. He will end by discussing the cosmic significance of stone walls with respect to his latest book review “We are Stardust” for the Wall Street Journal.
A question and answer session will be offered at the end of the presentation.
Robert M. Thorson is a Professor of Geology at the University of Connecticut, the author of seven books including Beyond Walden: The Hidden History of America’s Kettle Lakes and Ponds; The Guide to Walden Pond, Walden’s Shore: Henry David Thoreau and Nineteenth-Century Science, Exploring Stone Walls, and Stone by Stone: The Fascinating History in New England’s Stone Walls, and the coordinator of the Stone Wall Initiative, New England’s premiere resource for historic stone walls. As Professor Thorson likes to say, he is a “Midwestern Native turned Northwestern Geologist turned New England Professor”
